BEAUTY: Installation--Open Border

Since 2009 the Canadian art festival titled "Warming Huts: An Art + Architecture Competition on Ice" has celebrated two things: innovative design and cold weather. The festival normally consists of artistic, clever, temporary huts (to give ice skaters and snow lovers a respite from the cold) built along the frozen Red and Assiniboine rivers which are part of the Forks National Historic Site in Winnipeg.

For this year's festival, Atelier ARI in conjunction with Sputnik Architecture created not a hut along the banks of the Assiniboine, but a border across it. However, this is no ordinary border. Entitled Open Border and made of red PVC strips, this seeming solid barrier is actually a permeable structure allowing skaters and ice revelers to pass right through it. And this site specific installation is a lovely "eff-you" to the American Monster-in-chief who wants to erect actual border walls and prevent people who hold already-approved visas and green cards from entering the country.
